Highlights

  • Medu launched a surgical video that shows a heart transplant filmed in Mexico City.
  • The video was produced in collaboration with the first female surgeon to perform a heart transplant in Mexico, Dr. María del Sol García Ortegón.

Medu, the leading medical streaming platform in Latin America, launched the second of February a powerful video showing a heart transplant filmed in Mexico City. Medu produced the video in collaboration with the first female surgeon to perform a heart transplant in Mexico, Dr. María del Sol García Ortegón, and leading health professionals. This project aimed to provide an inside look at the heart transplant procedure, educate health professionals, and raise awareness about organ donation and transplantation in Mexico.

In 2017, Dr. García Ortegón made history by becoming the first female Mexican surgeon to successfully perform a heart transplant. Her innovative techniques, compassionate care, and relentless commitment to saving lives have earned her a reputation as one of the nation’s leading cardiothoracic surgeons.

“It is an important day,” Dr. María del Sol told medical photographer Carlos Mendoza Márquez on the day of the transplant. For Carlos, producing this video was an opportunity to witness a moment of great human compassion and medical innovation. “People ask me if I have seen a patient die when I tell them about my work. That day, we saw someone die to give many others another chance. That is important,” he said.

The tension in the operating room was palpable as the team waited for the donor heart to arrive. Carlos described that moment as “a feeling of anxiety waiting for a person running with a cooler to appear at any moment as if it were a ticking time bomb.” Yet, despite the high stakes, everyone in the room was focused and determined to make this life-saving procedure a success.

The video offers a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to learn about the procedure and gain a deeper understanding of heart transplantation. The Medu team was inspired by the Dr.’s work and wanted to share her story with the world. “That night, I saw the news about the transplant on television. I almost couldn’t believe I had been there in the front row, having experienced such an important day,” says Carlos Mendoza, who is part of Medu’s audiovisual production team.

Surgical videos are an indispensable tool for training and educating surgeons. They provide an up-close and personal look at procedures, allowing surgeons-in-training, as well as those with a long history, to see the intricacies of the procedure, understand the techniques used, and learn about best practices. In addition, by watching and learning from other experienced surgeons, they can gain valuable information and practical insights that will help them perform surgeries with greater precision and confidence. On Medu, healthcare providers can pause and play the video, answer interactive questions, view flashcards, and take notes. This way, they can take the time to go through each step and gain a deeper understanding of the procedure. They can also learn from the surgeon’s challenges in the video and be better prepared to deal with similar situations in their surgeries.

Medu’s health education platform provides accurate and up-to-date information and resources to promote health. The Medu team is committed to providing healthcare professionals with access to valuable information and resources that can help improve the lives of their patients. The heart transplant video is proof of this commitment and is available for free on medu.mx throughout the month of February.

The video is not just a testimony to the power of medical innovation and its impact on people’s lives. It is also a story of perseverance, determination, and the human spirit. Dr. María del Sol faced countless challenges and obstacles in her journey to become a heart transplant surgeon, but she never gave up on her dream. Her story demonstrates the power of hard work, dedication, and the belief that anything is possible.
